Licensing & pricing

Is it really a one-time purchase?

Yes. A perpetual license never expires. It's free up to 50 assets, then $1 per asset with a 500-asset minimum ($500), in blocks of 50 above that. The first year of updates is included. After that, renewing updates is optional at $50 per year, and if you don't renew, your version keeps working forever.

What counts as an asset?

Every active device: computers, servers, VMs, printers, switches, phones, cameras, and connected devices such as monitors that report identification data. Archived assets, agents, users, software titles and AD objects don't count. See Licensing.

Is the free edition limited in features?

No. It has every feature, including vulnerabilities, patch management, compliance, deployment and the help desk, for up to 50 assets, with no time limit.

Can I try it without installing anything?

Yes. The live demo is the real Census console with sample data from a fictional company of about 200 devices. It's read-only, so nothing you click changes anything. To see your own network, download Census: it's free up to 50 assets.

Does Census install updates?

Yes. Windows computers ask their own Windows Update (or your WSUS) what's missing, applications update through winget, and Linux computers use their package manager (apt, dnf, zypper, pacman, apk). You approve updates automatically by classification or by hand, and Census installs them now or in a maintenance window. See Patch management.

Are the SSL certificates really free?

Yes. Census uses Let's Encrypt, a nonprofit certificate authority trusted by all major browsers and operating systems, and never charges for the certificates. The optional add-on automates installation and renewal beyond your first (free) server: $50 per server or $500 unlimited, once. See Free SSL certificates.

How do I activate a license?

Paste the key you receive under Configuration › License. Activation is fully offline and the key is verified on your server. Keys are issued for one server, so include its Server ID when you order.

Can several people use it?

Yes, with unlimited logins. Use the Viewer role or custom roles for limited access. Only help desk technicians beyond the first need a seat ($100 each, one time).

Privacy & security

Does anything get sent to the cloud?

No. Everything runs and is stored on your server, and license activation is offline. Census downloads public vulnerability and end-of-life data daily (no information about your network is sent). You can turn that off and upload the files yourself. See Security & privacy.

Installation & requirements

Do I need SQL Server, IIS or a domain?

No. The server is a single program with a built-in database. Active Directory is optional. PostgreSQL is supported for very large installations.

Agent or agentless?

Both. Agentless scanning (WinRM, SSH, SNMP) covers your office network with nothing installed. The Census agent covers laptops, remote sites and anything scanning can't reach, and makes actions instant. The same computer can use both, and its data merges into one asset.

Which operating systems are supported?
  • Server: Windows Server 2016+ / Windows 10+, or 64-bit Linux (x64 or ARM64).
  • Inventory: Windows 11 and 10 (and older, back to Windows 8), Windows Server 2025 back to 2012, Linux, macOS, BSD and other Unix, plus SNMP network devices.
  • Agent: Windows, Linux and macOS (x64 and ARM).
How many assets can one server handle?

A single server has been load-tested with 10,000 assets and agents. The built-in database handles about 10,000 assets comfortably. For larger estates, or very large agent rollouts, use PostgreSQL. See Sizing.

Can I use it from Linux or a Mac?

Yes. The web console works in any current browser. Remote Desktop downloads an .rdp file that Remmina or Microsoft's Windows App can open, and the optional Action Launcher is available for Windows and Linux.

How do I move to a new server?

Restore a backup on the new server with one command. Because the server certificate is restored too, agents keep reporting. Moving to a different server needs a replacement key from us, and your current key keeps working for 30 days meanwhile.

Is it available in other languages?

The console is available in English, German, French, Spanish, Dutch, Italian and Portuguese, and each login can choose its own. The documentation is in English.
