Licensing questions
What counts as an asset?
Every active device: computers, servers, VMs, printers, switches, phones, cameras, and connected devices such as monitors with identification data. Archived assets don't count, so retiring a device frees its slot. Agents, users, software titles and AD objects are never counted.
What happens when I reach my limit?
Nothing breaks. Existing assets keep updating normally. New devices are found but not added until you archive old ones or add an add-on key. Scan history shows how many were skipped.
What does "1 year of updates" mean?
Your key covers every Census version released during its updates period. After that, the version you have keeps working forever. To get newer versions, renew updates for $50 per year, whatever the size of your license. A renewal continues from the end of your previous period, so time since it ended is included: updates that ended September 1, 2027 and are renewed on September 1, 2028 for a year ahead cost two years ($100).
Do I pay for SSL certificates?
No. Census uses free, browser-trusted certificates from Let's Encrypt. The certificate renewal add-on only pays for automating renewal on more than one server ($50 per server or $500 unlimited, once). Your first server is free. See Free SSL certificates.
Can I add assets later?
Yes. Add-on keys in blocks of 50 assets, at $1 each, stack on your license.
Do I need a new key if I move to a new server?
Reinstalling or upgrading keeps your license. Moving Census to a different server needs a replacement key from us, and your key keeps working for 30 days meanwhile.
Do you offer refunds?
Yes. See our refund policy. Because the free edition has every feature, we recommend trying Census on up to 50 devices first.
Are there discounts for nonprofits, schools or MSPs?
