Bring your asset list. Keep your evenings.
Export your list from the tool you use today, import the file into Census as it is, and let the first scan fill in the rest. Most networks are inventoried the same afternoon, and you can keep the old tool running until you're sure.
From install to a full inventory
Install
One program on Windows Server or 64-bit Linux, with its own database. No SQL Server, IIS or cloud account.
Get started
Census lists the networks your server is on. Tick them, add a Windows, Linux or SNMP login if you like, and click Start scanning. You watch the devices appear.
Import your list
Export your current asset list to CSV and import the file as it is. Census checks it first and shows what each row will do before anything changes.
Run side by side
Scans keep the hardware, software and users up to date. What only your list knew (location, owner, purchase date) stays. Switch off the old tool when you're ready.
Your export, as it is
- Column names other tools use are recognized, in any order: asset name, system name, serial number, model, category, checked-out-to user, warranty date and many more.
- Type and status names are translated: a Laptop or Workstation becomes Windows, Linux or macOS from its operating system, Deployed and Active mean in use.
- Dates as your tool writes them: 2024-03-31, 31.03.2024, 3/31/2024 or Mar 31, 2024. A warranty given in months is counted from the purchase date.
- Nothing is lost quietly: a type or status Census doesn't know is left out with a note, the row still imports, and columns it doesn't use are listed.
- Your own fields come along: create a custom field with the column's name and it is filled.
- Help desk tickets import from CSV too.
What Census finds by itself
- Hardware and software of every computer it can log in to, or that runs the Census agent.
- Every device that answers on the network, recognized as a printer, switch, camera, phone or access point.
- Vulnerabilities, missing updates and unsupported systems, worked out from what it read.
- An IT health score on the dashboard, and a one-page monthly report you can send your manager.
Questions people ask before switching
Do I have to stop the old tool?
No. Census scans on its own and doesn't touch your current tool. Run both while you compare.
Do imported assets count toward the license?
Yes, like scanned ones. The free edition covers 50 assets with every feature; a license is $1 per asset, once.
What if the same device is imported and scanned?
Census matches it by serial number, MAC address or name, so you get one asset, not two.
How the import works in detail: Importing from CSV. First steps after installing: Get started.
