FAQ

Is it really a one-time purchase? Yes. A perpetual license never expires. Free up to 50 assets; above that $1 per asset, with a 500-asset minimum. See Licensing.

Does anything get sent to the cloud? No. Everything runs and is stored on your server, and license activation is offline. See Security & privacy.

Do I need SQL Server, IIS or a domain? No. The server is a single program with a built-in database. Active Directory is optional. PostgreSQL is supported for very large installations.

Agent or agentless? Both. Agentless scanning (WinRM, SSH, SNMP) covers your office network with nothing installed. The Census agent covers laptops, remote sites and anything scanning can't reach, and makes actions instant. Mixed is normal: the same computer can be both, and data is merged into one asset.

Which operating systems are supported?

  • Server: Windows Server 2016+ / Windows 10+, or 64-bit Linux.
  • Inventory: Windows 11 and 10 (and older, back to Windows 8), Windows Server 2025 back to 2012, Linux, macOS, BSD and other Unix, plus SNMP network devices.
  • Agent: Windows, Linux and macOS (x64 and ARM).

Do I need a browser plugin for actions? Only for launcher actions that open tools on your own PC (Computer Management, C$ share, remote PowerShell). Everything else works in any browser. See Asset actions.

Can I use it from Linux or a Mac? Yes. The web interface works in any browser. Remote Desktop downloads an .rdp file that Remmina or Microsoft's Windows App can open, and the Census Action Launcher is available for Linux.

How do I move to a new server? Restore a backup on the new server (see Backups), then send its new Server ID (Configuration › License) to Steward IT for a replacement key. Your key keeps working on the new server for 30 days meanwhile. See Licensing.

Can several people use it? Yes, with unlimited logins (help desk technicians beyond the first are an add-on). Use the Viewer role for read-only access.

How do I uninstall it? Control Panel › Programs and Features on Windows, or census-server uninstall / census-agent uninstall. See Installation and Census agent.
