Documentation › Using Steward IT Census

Knowledge base

Knowledge base (the book icon at the top right) is where your team documents how things are done: procedures, known problems and their fixes, tips and tricks, checklists. Anyone with a login can read it. Technicians can link articles to tickets, and articles you choose can be shared with your users in the help desk portal.

Reading and searching#

  • The left panel lists the categories with their article counts; All articles shows everything, pinned articles first, then the most recently updated.
  • Search looks in titles, text and tags. Several words must all appear.
  • Each article shows its tags, who updated it last and how often it was read.

Writing articles#

Administrators and roles with the Knowledge base editor permission (Configuration › Logins & roles) see New article, Edit and Delete.

  • Title, Category (pick an existing one or type a new one) and Tags (comma separated, used by search).
  • Pin to the top keeps important articles first in their list.
  • Show in the help desk portal shares the article with your users (marked 🌐): they can read and search it in the user portal. Only tick it for articles meant for end users.
  • The text is Markdown with a live preview next to it:

Built-in articles#

New installations get a category Steward IT Census with articles on getting started, deploying the agent with Group Policy, troubleshooting agents, enabling WinRM, SNMP on switches (incl. Cisco), restoring a backup or moving the server, building reports without SQL, and useful registry/file scan items. A category Windows & Active Directory has practical fixes, starting with repairing a computer's broken domain trust without rejoining the domain. They are ordinary articles: edit them to fit your environment or delete them. Updates add new built-in articles; articles you deleted don't come back, and your edits are kept.
